Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Airport Information
(Hong Kong, China)
Recently voted the World's Best Airport 2007, Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) has much to be proud about and ranks as the world's 14th busiest facility of its kind, currently seeing annual passenger levels of around 44 million. Hong Kong Airport is surrounded by water and is just 40 km / 25 miles to the south-west of the central of Hong Kong, close to both Lau Fau Sha and Ngau Kwu Long.
The airport itself is a modern and impressive complex, due to considerable reinvestment, forward planning and high standards. Currently $4.5 billion is being spent to improve facilities at Hong Kong Airport even further, and this will include an extension of the central concourse and the construction of the adjacent SkyCity, home to the AsiaWorld-Expo, SkyPier, grand hotels and a magnificent golf course. Hong Kong Airport currently handles upwards of 3.5 million tons of cargo, features a staff of 60,000 and regularly features Airbus 380 passenger flights, the biggest commercial aircraft on the planet.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) Information: History and Facilities
Built in the early 1990s on a small island, much of which was man-made and had been extended by back-filled land, construction of Hong Kong's airport lasted just over six years and cost a staggering $20 billion to complete. The airport finally opened in 1998 and soon began to suffer with a series of short-lived, but serious technical issues and problems.
However, these were soon rectified and services at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) were soon operating as expected. More recently, at the beginning of 2007, a secondary passenger terminal was completed and features an extensive shopping centre, known as the SkyPlaza, along with a number of entertainment venues. This complemented the already popular SkyMart complex in Terminal 1, where the Asian restaurants and food court area are particular draw cards.
